The last time I had my hair cut and coloured was at Ishi Salon (see here) after having grown it out for a couple years before for our wedding that same year. I found out about Ishi after my first Of One Mind event held at their salon (see here) and I loved the fresh style I got when I gave Craig Kane, my stylist, free reign to do what he thought would suit. Since becoming vegan though, there are a lot of things that you realise you would need to take into account: like finding a new hairdresser that uses vegan friendly products.
It was one of those things that never crossed my mind, but when I thought about it, it did make sense. I was using vegan friendly brands for my skin and hair care products, so why wouldn’t I expect the same from my hairdresser services? Luckily, finding local vegan groups help with this dilemma and I quickly made an appointment with Emma Hall Hair Design to get my hair trimmed and re-coloured.
I made a very special vegan trip to Glasgow at the end of February. James Aspey, vegan activist from Australia, was going to be in Scotland for the first time to talk to over 150 vegans attending a workshop organised by Go Vegan Scotland. My very good friends from Australia had talked about and posted James’ speech on social media (you can watch the one minute version here) and I was touched and encouraged by his passion to speak on behalf of the animals being consumed either as food or products we use on a daily basis. I was also lucky to meet and have a quick chat with James at the Go Vegan Scotland stall at Buchanan Street in the afternoon.
When you’re in another city that offers such a wide variety of vegan-friendly or vegan only restaurants and cafes, you can’t go all the way to Glasgow and not sample all the good places you’ve heard so much about, so that’s exactly what I did…fitted in a few vegan bar/restaurants and a cafe to my day trip schedule!
The founder of the UK’s only fully independent and inclusive networking site for vegans, Lynn Jolly, is looking to open central Scotland’s first ever fully vegan animal sanctuary (see here).
The Glasgow ‘Veganpreneur’ who late last year launched Bohemian Hippy – the UK’s first official social networking site with integrated shop, resources and vegan directory – is using the money generated from the site to fund the project and is looking to get others involved in the project through crowdfunding and possible grants. Blogs are great because they are the complete personality of the people behind them, I will guarantee that you will not find a blog that is identical to another. (Maybe the theme but not the content).
One thing I have enjoyed learning from my blogger interviews is why people started their blog, it is something that I’ve never actually thought about before but is actually really interesting.
If someone asked you today, ‘Where are you from?’, what would your answer be? There’s a chance that you will have left the country you grew up in and have made yourself a new home in a different district or completely different country altogether. If you’ve moved to another country, is that now your home? Do you identify with the people you now live amongst? If so, to answer that you’re from the country you identified with growing up might no longer apply.
Today we celebrate the UN World Day of Social Justice, but it’s also a day that calls for a united front in a social movement, a national day of action, represented by the hashtag #1DayWithoutUs. The versatility of cooking a vegan meal at home makes it easy to be vegan. When you decide to cook a meal, a lot of the time you end up thinking whether or not this will go with that, will this go with those two ingredients? With vegan meals, because you’re working with plant-based food, you only need to think about what you want to throw in it and it’s done. There’s no need to worry about mushrooms not going together well with kale or asparagus; they’re all plants and don’t have as strong a flavour as meat and somehow each complement each other perfectly.
One thing I eat a lot of is rice, to switch it up for the OH I decided to cook risotto based on this recipe here from Veganuary’s website for risotto primavera…except I winged it. My way.
As a new vegan looking to have a meal with friends, whether vegan or not, where do you go? If you’ve never eaten out as a vegan, would you know where to go? It seems everywhere you turn, there are cafes and restaurants that cater to

A common misconception about being vegan is that we only eat vegetables. You would be wrong if you thought that. Being vegan doesn’t mean eating unappetising salads and raw vegetables all the time. Once I started looking into what it means to be vegan and if you search #whatveganseat you’ll find there are a lot of amazing food that we do eat!
You do eat healthier because you’re eating a lot more plant based products and less processed foods, but as I mentioned in my first post about Veganuary (see here), there are also a lot of sweet stuff we can eat as well, like ice cream! The other thing I’ve also come to learn is how easy it is to substitute non-vegan ingredients in recipes for vegan substitutes. This is exactly what I’ve done with a recipe from The Recipe Rebel here for chocolate peanut butter pinwheels.
I’ve been working laboriously last week while I was on leave from work to try and catch up with baby sewing projects. I’ve managed to get all the pieces cut out and I’m looking to get baby blankets sewn during the week. I’ll hopefully have a quick tutorial on making blankets (for babies and adults!) up on my blog soon for you!
For now, as you’ll probably have realised from my last few posts (here and here), I’ve got a few friends who are mothers to wee humans or are expecting. I collated a series of tutorials for easy sewing projects for babies here which I’m working through, and one project that I figured I’d get done is a hooded towel.
