I don’t usually eat too many protein products even though I should be diligently consuming protein before and after a workout. Since starting BodyCombat almost 5 years ago (see my previous post about it here), I’ve since also been doing BodyPump (here) and BodyBalance as well as kickboxing classes racking it up to 5-hours of classes a week. I had been making up protein shakes using sachets from my Purition vegan trial box (see my review for it here), but I find sometimes it’s a snack right after class that I need to curb those cravings.
When I realised the whey protein shake powder contained milk, I realised I needed to find another alternative which I did in Purition, but what about snack bars? I now couldn’t just stop in the local shops on my way home to snack on a chocolate bar. Luckily during my Veganuary month (see here), one of their proud sponsors Pulsin’ put together an exclusive Veganuary snack box for participants.
I had been given a themed subscription box before as a birthday present and also subscribed for a short time to a beauty subscription box, but never ended up keeping them for long. I can be quite pernickety and trying to use all the products in the box was something I found difficult. At the time I subscribed to the beauty box, I was looking to be introduced to more products and brands I might not have been aware of, but I don’t use too much makeup and a lot of the products in the box ended up not being something I really was looking for.
When I became vegan, I was tempted by the thought of getting monthly vegan boxes in the post. TheVeganKind offers two different kind of boxes: the monthly Lifestyle Box where you receive between 5 to 8 food and lifestyle cruelty free, vegan products (worldwide delivery available); or the Beauty Box which offers a mix of skin care, cosmetics and beauty products delivered every 3 months (UK delivery only).
Given my past experience with another beauty box, I didn’t want to take the chance that I would be struggling to use all the beauty and skin care products, I decided to go with the Lifestyle Box.

The last time I had my hair cut and coloured was at Ishi Salon (see here) after having grown it out for a couple years before for our wedding that same year. I found out about Ishi after my first Of One Mind event held at their salon (see here) and I loved the fresh style I got when I gave Craig Kane, my stylist, free reign to do what he thought would suit. Since becoming vegan though, there are a lot of things that you realise you would need to take into account: like finding a new hairdresser that uses vegan friendly products.
It was one of those things that never crossed my mind, but when I thought about it, it did make sense. I was using vegan friendly brands for my skin and hair care products, so why wouldn’t I expect the same from my hairdresser services? Luckily, finding local vegan groups help with this dilemma and I quickly made an appointment with Emma Hall Hair Design to get my hair trimmed and re-coloured.
There are some shops that you don’t pay much attention to when you’re in a hurry or have a destination in mind, but when that happens you tend to miss the wee hidden gems dotted about Edinburgh. A couple of doors down from the cat cafe Maison de Moggy on West Port, I recently attended the spring launch party for Godiva Boutique in Grassmarket and I realised this was one of those overlooked hidden gems. Blogs are great because they are the complete personality of the people behind them, I will guarantee that you will not find a blog that is identical to another. (Maybe the theme but not the content).
One thing I have enjoyed learning from my blogger interviews is why people started their blog, it is something that I’ve never actually thought about before but is actually really interesting.
I’d reviewed and wrote a post about Italian chain restaurant Zizzi before (see here) and I enjoyed my visit. On my most recent second visit, I’ve now experienced two different menus. It’s no secret that I love my sweets and cakes. I’ve been baking for as long as I can remember, even if my earlier attempts in high school were made from Betty Crocker cake mix packets and failed attempts at following recipes. Since those earlier years, I’ve become a bit more experienced with making different kinds of cakes, but since becoming vegan while I do know of vegan hacks to original non-vegan friendly recipes (apart from my chocolate and peanut butter pin wheels, see here) I haven’t really been trying my hand too often at making cakes apart from the one I’m about to share with you and a vegan cheesecake I’ll be posting about later on.
I used to be very picky about what goes in my cakes, the thought of banana bread and carrot cake didn’t appeal to me. I did end up trying both of these, and the after taste of banana in a loaf still doesn’t really appeal to me, but I did come to like carrot cake. It’s surprising how this orange stick of a vegetable that is mostly associated with hummus or boiled as a side to go with a main dish can be grated and used in cake.
This recipe from Jamie Oliver follows a similar concept…except we turn to something a bit sweeter and used more often for sweet dishes and desserts.
