A revelation I had when I was away to Wales was that I had weak arms. I have been keeping myself to a level of fitness by attending bi-weekly Combat classes for the past 18 months and I thought my whole body had reached a level of strength that I was happy with. That is, until I had to lift plastic tubs filled a quarter of the way with water over the fences to the sheeps’ pens. My arms were literally shaking from the effort. When I came back and went to my first Combat class after the holidays, I realised how much I’ve strengthened my arms: I struggle with push ups on my toes, but I had no problems doing this after my trip.
This made me realise that the only way to improve my one weakness (I might not have bingo wings any longer – got rid of that within the first 3 weeks of 5 Combat classes – and I’ve built muscle there although it’s not as strong as I’d like if I can’t even lift my own body weight off the floor) is to actually lift weights. I’m not a fan of the gym for various reasons, and I’ve enjoyed Les Mills’ programmes and I’ve now realised that my previous thoughts of joining BodyPump is the way to go.

I’ve always had a certain level of apprehension when it comes to weightlifting as I’m not built like a body builder and don’t want strongly defined muscles like one. Having realised I need to improve my own upper body strength though, I’ve come to the conclusion that how built your muscles become depends on how hard you work it. If you want more definition, you work yourself to lifting heavier weights; if you’re like me and only want some definition so the muscles built in your arms don’t look like tree trunks, use weights that is slightly heavier than what you’re comfortable with, but don’t work too hard in building up resistance. The weights you lift is your choice, just because other people are lifting huge weights in the same class, it’s all about tailoring your own workouts to suit your needs.
I won’t be starting BodyPump right away, I’ve booked myself in this week for the BodyPump Technique class so that I can prepare myself with the proper way of acheiving the best results and making sure I don’t strain myself trying to lift weights, then I’ll be getting myself on the proper BodyPump classes starting next week, just before my weekend BodyCombat classes.
